Furygan Coburn Jacket Review
I’m truly impressed with this jacket; it exudes quality and style, on or off the bike.
Furygan started business in 1969 and are still based in Nimes in the south of France. They produce race leathers for a host of famous racers, but I did discover that the full hide leather they use is imported from Argentina and Brazil and treated in tanneries in Italy.
The use of Italian tanneries goes a long way to explain why the feel of the thick leather (1.1 mm) is fine grain, soft with a sheen rather than a shine. The colour, a tan side of brown called Marron Rusted, delivers a perfect combination for off or on the bike.
Furygan have treated the leather to give the “Coburn” a vintage look and have done a great job.
The overall style is simple; French élan at its best. Two zipped large pockets at the front big enough for folded maps, a small zipped breast pocket for sunglasses or a phone plus a right hand zipped pocket on the inside for passport.
Another secret zipped pocket runs the width of the back of the jacket; this for the back armour if you require it.
Armour supplied is shoulder and elbow rated as D30, and again, stamped with Furygan’s logo.
A midweight YKK steel zip and 30 mm overlap seals the jacket tight at the front, with two snaps for the low rise Mandarin collar. Zips at the cuff keep the wind at bay.
The shoulder yokes have three seams stitched across the length and four more seams at the shoulder for strength and decoration. The Furygan Panther logo sits discreet but proud on the upper right arm. A single air hole can be found on each armpit if you search for it.
Inside is a searing red polyester lining, which, in my opinion should be shades of blue as it looks better with tan. Anyway, the lining is cross stitched in the time-honoured fashion.
There is no thermal liner, so for the faint hearted it’s probably a three-season jacket.
The fit is slim, there are waist adjustments which give another 60 mm around the waist. I’m a 38” chest; medium size 38-40 fits like a glove with enough room for an electric jacket or submarine jersey in colder climes.
The jacket is treated to be waterproof; maintenance too, is easy…
In writing this review I’ve had to return to the jacket, admire the colours, touch the hide, re-examine the detail and try it on… More than once. Such joy!
Design simplicity, fine materials and beautifully executed work; I’d be happy to wear this on a journey to anywhere, anytime of year. And I’d swank it in the office too.
Without doubt, a long term classic piece. I’ll let you know how it fares during real world living in a few thousand miles, as I’ll use it for my ride into Central Asia later this year.
